And now for something entirely different — (to borrow a phrase from Monty Python)

We have all had our bad days but not like Michael Phelps in the mens’ 400-meter Individual Medley race earlier today in London, England at the start of the 2012 Olympic Games.  He lost to his main rival, Ryan Lochte.  That has got to really “bite”.  Phelps has been unbeatable in all of his Olympic swimming finals spanning 3 prior Olympics.

Perhaps this will spur Michael on to some really rip-roaring fast times in his remaining events.

.

If anyone has seen the short video of Lochte envisioning how the “perfect” race would unfold for him – videotaped before today’s event – it was really quite a bold statement by this athlete.

.

And just as Tiger Woods seemed so far above the rest of the field of mere mortal golfers so too has Ryan Lochte demonstrated that the mightiest of athletes are not “untouchable”.

.

Sometimes it all boils down to willpower and “who wants it more”.

.

This should set the stage for a very exciting 2012 Olympics.  After all, it’s all about the quality of competition.
