By a vote of 230-189 the House of (“Cards”) Representatives voted to defund Obamacare and force a shutdown of the government on October 1st unless the President’s signature legislative program is defunded. What can one say but that House Speaker John Boehner is now a mere figure-head, pretending to preside over a Banana-Republic style legislative body. The inmates are running the asylum.
.
The Continuing Resolution that is badly needed to keep the government running after October 15th is now in jeopardy. This is like driving down the road at 60-mph and then taking the keys out of the ignition.
.
Boehner has completely relinquished the reins to 50 or so Tea-Party legislators within his Republican caucus and it seems very problematic whether or not the House can reconcile with the Senate’s version of any Continuing Resolution it may propose.
.
Of course, we also have the Debt Ceiling Limit occurring on or about December 15th. All appropriations that have been approved by Congress need to be paid – IN FULL – and if the ceiling is not increased there will be defaults. So much for the “full faith and credit” of this country. Assuredly, the rating agencies (Moodys and Standard & Poor) will be in a position to further downgrade the credit rating of this country.
.
I hope the President has a strategy for dealing with this but it is quite clear he does not intend to allow Obamacare to be defunded nor does he intend to negotiate over whether or not to increase the Debt Ceiling in exchange for cuts in social programs.
.
Is this a Mexican standoff? If so, we are truly living in a Banana Republic. Viva la Tea Baguettes!
